Promoting Independence

Promoting Independence

Independence in our clients is described as social medicine. It is the ability to carry out activities that support one’s own lifestyle and to control the care given by others. Our clients must feel as though they have some control over their lives to become more independent and to maintain their dignity. Dignity is best described as one’s self-worth or self-respect.

The tips below will help you in assisting your clients with their independence on a daily basis:

  1. Teach new ways to complete a task to make it easier for the client. Become adaptive and flexible in how a task is completed.

  2. Become the client’s coach. Be positive. Encourage the feeling of usefulness in daily tasks and duties.

  3. Promote self-management. This helps clients retain their abilities for longer. Our goal is to keep our clients as independent as possible, for as long as possible.

  4. Promote collaboration in tasks. If your client can perform certain tasks, or part of the task, encourage them to help! This can be on household tasks or personal care tasks. The client might be able to help with washing dishes, while you dry and put them away. For example, the client might be able to wash their body in the shower but need your assistance in getting in and out.

  5. Always focus on the client’s capabilities, not their weaknesses.
